About my area
My village is in the east of the Charente département and just 5kms from the Dordogne. Both départements are part of the newly formed Nouvelle Aquitaine region, one which is becoming increasingly well-known as it is now number one in terms of size of UK expat population. The countryside, including the beautiful Périgord-Limousin National Park, boasts wonderful scenery and plenty of fresh air. There are lots of things to do for those who enjoy the outdoor life and with the help of the local tourist office something to suit almost every taste can be found. Having previously lived in or near cities, the friendly locals, quiet roads, picturesque little villages & historic towns, regular festivals and various markets filled with local produce make a refreshing change. The lakes of the Haute Charente, with boating, swimming, canoeing and fishing, are not far and historic Angoulême with its beautiful old town and annual classic car race is only 40kms away. Angoulême also boasts a high speed TGV link to Paris and the UK (via Lille). Day trips to the beaches at Royan, the Côte Sauvage or La Rochelle are possible whilst those who prefer shopping, culture and fine dining have Limoges and Cognac less than an hour away by car. Limoges also has an airport which is served by low cost carriers from the UK; other options are Bordeaux or Bergerac.
About me
Originally from India, I have lived most of my life in the UK and also spent over ten years in Luxembourg however I have always been fascinated by France – its culture, countryside, food (& wine) and people. This last point is particularly pertinent as I ended up saying ‘OUI’ to a lovely French girl! My fascination continued to grow through various trips and holidays to France and culminated with my wife and me deciding upon a complete change in lifestyle for our young family by making a permanent move to a beautiful village in the picturesque Charente. Having worked in the finance industry for almost two decades, the outdoor life and fresh air feels like a world away from when I commuted to work and spent my day in front of my computer or in meetings. The area is beautiful, the people are genuinely warm and friendly and there is always plenty to keep us busy – be it working on the house & land or taking part in one of the many activities on offer with the family. Now embarking on a second career, I am looking forward to meeting people from different backgrounds; sharing my love of France and helping them find a similarly enjoyable way of life.
