LOCAL HISTORY & PLACES TO VISIT.
If you walk through the woods of Clamart you can visit Hanger Y built for dirigables. The woods were the scene of battles between the Gallic troops of Camulogène and the Roman troops of Labienus in 52 BC. In Julius Caesar's Commentaries on the First Battle of Paris, mention is made of a Roman camp that could be located today near the carrefour de l'Anémomètre.
In front of the Meudon observatory you can walk along the terrace of the Château de Bellevue that was built for Madame de Pompadour in 1750, sadly the chateau was demolished in 1823.
In the Meudon Museum of Art & History you can see a painting by Langlacé in 1818 showins fields stretching out from Meudon to Paris in the distance.
Royal porcelaine factory that moved to Sèvres in 1756.
Villa des Brillants now a museum was bought in 1895 by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). At his villa, the sculptor entertained VIPs such as Edward VII [King of England 1901 - 1910], Eleonore Roosevelt (1884-1962), painter Eugène Carrière and sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, who also lived in Meudon. Rodin used to visit his friend, the dancer Isadora Duncan (1877-1927), who in 1913 had set up her dance school nearby, in the Pavillon de Bellevue, now Place Aristide-Briand.

LES CARRIÈRES DE CLAMART
A map made in 1773 does not show any small wheels symbolizing underground quarry extraction shafts in Clamart, it shows a valley with a flowing stream. By 1834, seven quarries were operating in Clamart.
The golden age of building stone was between 1830 and 1914. The Paris to Versailles railway opened in 1840 (Clamart was the first stop on the line at that time), and the fortifications of Paris (Thiers wall built between 1841 & 1844). Both required a great deal of stone, and to avoid costly transport, it was quarried as close as possible to where it was needed.
According to an 1900 map there were 11 quarries with in a kilometer of the property.

It was at the end of the First Empire (1814-5) that the old quarries were discovered to be suitable for mushroom cultivation. A story goes that one of the Emperor's officers, who had taken refuge in an abandoned quarries where large quantities of horse manure had been dumped, discovered a providential crop of mushrooms that enabled him to survive. By 1893, there were 236 mushroom farms in the Seine department alone! Undoubtedly some of the old quarries around Clamart would have been used for mushrooms but Clamart was famous for its peas in Paris which were the first of the season.

In 1974 the site of the property was used for market gardening as were the fields around. It was bought by the current owner to build a factory that speciallised in fashion garments that became internationally recognised. With the evolution of world markets the factory closed and two modern apartment buildings A & B were built and finished in around 2018.
