HISTORY AND FACTS ABOUT LE MESNIL-LE-ROI
The name Le Mesnil comes from the Latin “mansionilis”, meaning “small dwelling or hamlet”. Its royal origins can be traced back to Hugues Capet (King from 987-996).
Over the years, many of the kings who lived in Saint-Germain-en-Laye visited Le Mesnil-Le-Roi. A story mentions François 1er (King from 1515-1547) was raised in the Château de Vaux, built in the 15th century and known as “la Nourricerie”. Others say it was the kennel for the King's hunting dogs, or the refuge for the Court's adulterous children.
Charles IX (King from 1560-1574) liked to hunt in the marshes on the banks of the Seine.
Louis XIII son of Henri IV et de Marie de Médicis, (King 1610-1643) as a child visited to taste Madame de La Salle's jams in Carrières!
Louis XIV “le Roi-Soleil” son of Louis XIII (king from 1643-1715) after hunting wild boar liked to visit Mademoiselle de la Vallière, who had a pied-à-terre near the forest, she was his mistresses from 1661 to 1667.
Until the 15th century, the lands of Le Mesnil mainly belonged to several abbeys. However, they were then sold off to the bourgeoisie of Paris or to royal officers, who were thus able to live close to the Court Court where they exercised their office. There were 400 inhabitants at the time of the Revolution, 517 in 1849 and 810 in 1902. The railroad arrived in Maisons-Laffitte in 1843, making the commune even more popular with middle-class families fleeing the stench and pollution of Paris.
BLESSED WITH RICH FERTILE AGRICULTURAL LAND
The wine from its hillside vineyards graced the royal table since the Middle Ages, the vines disappeared after the 2nd World War and plums from its orchards were exported to London until the early 20th century.
THE QUARRIES
These played a significant role in the region's history from the 17th to the 19th century. The quarries supplied the surrounding area, Versailles and Paris with fine Lutetian limestone also known as Pierre de Paris. The stone was floated up stream from the port in Carrières to build Hausmanian facades as the quaries under Paris had been exhausted.
The underground quarries ensures that the parkland bordering the property remains unbuildable, offering uninterrupted views and preserving the serene, green surroundings.
POSSIBLE ORIGINES OF THE PARIS MUSHROOM BOOM
It was at the end of the First Empire (1814-5) that the old quarries were discovered to be suitable for mushroom cultivation. A story goes that one of the Emperor's officers, who had taken refuge in an abandoned quarries where large quantities of horse manure had been dumped, discovered a providential crop of mushrooms that enabled him to survive.
In the mid-19th century, horticulturist Chambry came up with the idea of using the empty galleries of the abandoned quarries around the capital for cultivating mushrooms. The business spread rapidly among market gardeners. By 1893, there were 236 mushroom farms in the Seine department alone! Mushrooms are no longer grown in Le Mesnil-le-Roi, but it is hoped a mushroom farming will come back with recent advances in technology.
The dissused quarries in Le Mesnil-Le-Roi, were first fortified by the German army in 39-45. At the end of the war, Nato made it one of its fallback bases. The French army moved in a few decades later, before leaving the site in the late 90s. Today, over 10 kilometers of labyrinths remain. In 2001, they were bought by a private individual, Marc Laug, who left the site as it was. The 968-metre-long main alley leads to numerous corridors, giving access to rooms of varying size, carved out of the limestone. Ceiling heights sometimes reach several dozen metres.
December 31, 2010 Le Mesnil-le-Roi saw 3,000 party-goers celebrate New Year's Eve underground, in this former military base set in quarries.
HOME TO THE FIRST PARIS GOLF COURSE IN 1896
The first “Paris golf course” opened at Le Mesnil, before moving to La Boulie, as farmers resented the idea of disturbing the grazing of their horses and dairy cows with such a dangerous game and bizarre little balls!
In the mid-19th century, the Jockey Club organized races on the Mesnil meadow. The Hippodrome de Maisons-Laffitte opened in 1878 by Joseph Oller, inventor of the pari-mutuel machine.
