After more than 20 years living, working and travelling throughout Europe, I finally followed my dream of buying a rural property to renovate in the Aveyronnaise countryside in 2021. Growing up in Scotland, coming to the North Aveyron felt like coming home with a decidedly French flavour! Rugged landscapes, green hills, deep valleys and winding rivers reminded me of my Scottish roots, while the French culture, traditions, cuisine and way of life offered an exciting new chapter. With the influence of both the Massif Central and Mediterranean, Aveyron also gives me the contrast I love: crisp winters and snow, followed by long, warm summers of the South of France.
Having gone through the process of buying and selling properties and moving countries, I know that buying a home in France is much more than finding the right house. There's the excitement of pursuing a dream, as well as the practicalities, paperwork, timings and countless details that have to come together—particularly when buying from abroad. My own experience taught me how valuable it is to have knowledgeable, reliable people around you who can guide you through the process and help you find solutions when the inevitable unexpected questions arise.
I have a particular passion for old and traditional properties, especially those that have the potential to be brought back to life! I love buildings with history, traditional craftsmanship and character, and I am especially interested in renovation projects, sustainable living and properties that connect people with their natural surroundings. My own home is a renovation project, so I understand both the challenges and the enormous satisfaction that can come from breathing new life into an old property.
When I’m not helping clients with their property search, you’ll find me helping second homeowners take care of their properties in the local area, or find me outdoors with my dogs, working in the garden, foraging for mushrooms and celebrating local life. One of my favourite ways to discover the area is simply to follow the road. Winding through spectacular countryside, through steep-sided valleys, forests, cliffs, waterfalls and beautiful villages, with something new around almost every bend. It was one of the first things that captivated me when I came to North Aveyron to view my own property, and it still takes my breath away today.
North Aveyron is a wonderful destination for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Walking and hiking trails cross the region, while cycling, fishing, canoeing and camping offer countless ways to experience the landscape.
Food is an equally important part of life here. Aveyron is famous for its fine wines and generous traditional cuisine, from the wonderfully indulgent aligot, beef and local cheeses and spit roasted cake. If you're feeling more adventurous why not try the local delicacy 'tripou' or tripe!
The spectacular Aubrac plateau offers a completely different landscape, with wide open horizons, wildflowers and the famous Aubrac cattle that are so closely associated with the region. Throughout Aveyron, you’ll find medieval villages, historic buildings, local markets and small community festivals that give the area its distinctive character.
For me, the greatest attraction of Aveyron is the combination of space, nature and community. It is a place where people still know their neighbours, where village life remains important, and where you can experience the changing seasons at their fullest. Whether you are looking for an active outdoor lifestyle, a peaceful rural home or simply somewhere to slow down and reconnect with nature, Aveyron has something very special to offer.
